We have something a little different for Sinchi & Friends 90 in the form of a 4hr Italo set recorded at Berlin’s infamous Wilde Renate. Philipp Schultheis is a regular at the club via Marlon Hoffstadt’s Savour the Moment residency and serves up an excellent selection of hidden gems which we’re sure you’ll enjoy as much as we did. Furthermore, find more about the man behind the mix via his interview below.
ABOUT
1) Introduce yourself?
Hi. I’m Philipp Schultheis. I like to eat and sometimes I play my favourite records in public!
2) What have been your highlights from the last 12 months?
Besides deejaying eight or nine times at Wilde Renate in 2019, it was definitely one for the books to play at Gewölbe, Cologne – where I had one of my very first club experiences some years ago. And my first international gig at Peronas, Vilnius. 2019 was pretty cool!
3) What do you have lined up for the coming year?
No special plans yet – but I’m really hyped for an upcoming party in Frankfurt where I will play alongside Lauer and Benjamin Fröhlich.
MUSIC
4) Which track in the mix is your favourite right now?
As the mix lasts for more than four hours, I can’t point out a certain song. What I can say: I really enjoyed digging all those italo treasures, it’s like a collector’s album to me. So I’m thankful to got the chance to play quite a few in this special concept set.
5) What is your favourite track of the last 12 months?
There are a bunch of hits coming in my mind but when I discovered Red Axes – Sound Test last year while dancing to Roman Flügel at Panorama Bar, I was beyond words. You really must have the nerve to play this disturbing countdown moment. Everyone’s confused on the dancefloor until the party starts – out of nowhere!
6) What is the last record you bought?
I just ordered the vinyl of Eagles & Butterflies – Can’t Stop because of the included Gerd Janson Trax Shop Remix. Have a listen, it’s an anthem!
7) Whats your number 1 go to track of all time?
I really can’t answer this. As I am listening to many diverse music styles, I would have to name you one number 1 per genre.
8) Who or what are your biggest musical influences?
Saturdays at Robert Johnson, Frankfurt. (Offenbach to be honest!)
9) Tell us about 3 DJ’s / Producer’s we may not know but should be looking out for?
– Kendall (one for the italo fans)
– Jennifer Vanilla (one for the hipsters)
– Low Tape (one for the producers)
10) What is your favourite Venue or Festival to play at and why?
So the red floor at Wilde Renate, where I played every eight weeks in the last two years, is dedicated to house and disco music but comes along with and old dub sound system where every track sounds like a blast. There is the perfect infrastructure: space for enough dancers feeling the “no main floor-vibe”, a bar, a chill out area and a toilet. Haven’t played a festival yet so I can’t name a favourite.
PERSONAL
11) Do you have a ritual before you start playing or straight after?
Always nervous like hell before, a friend of mine showed me cough liquids with Irish wildflower-honey. Best you can get to calm down. And straight after I listen to the first minutes of the following artist for decency’s sake before going to the toilet.
12) What is your favourite bit of kit?
I’m not into producing (yet)! But if I was, I would love to experiment with a vocoder.
13) What is your favourite film score?
Would be way cooler to tell you something sophisticated from an old mafia classic probably, but I recently watched Sex Education on Netflix and the whole selection of music is genius and in the end of season one, when protagonist Otis is finally able to jerk off, Sigue Sigue Sputnik – Love Missile F1-11 comes on and it could not be more iconic!
14) What is your dream destination?
First I think of is Tokyo!
15) What makes you smile?
Good food and the green edition of Pringles.
