Sinchi & Friends 77 – Morze

Next up in the Sinchi series is Morze hailing from Russia who has put dark disco on the map in both St Petersburg and Moscow. Get to know the man behind the artist and the Oberwave community below.

About

1) Introduce yourself?

I’m Konstantin Morze — dj, producer and founder of OBERWAVE — the one and only label, community and party series dedicated to dark disco and other decadent music in Russia. In addition, I make Noir Bazaar parties that are dedicated to the dark side of Middle Eastern music. The most mystical, hypnotic and ominous tracks.

2) What have been your highlights from the last 12 months?

I’m constantly surprised with how much great new music is around me. Each time thinking it’s the coolest thing that I’ve ever listened to. Then in a few months I’m impressed again. Women, music and alcohol — they are my favourite things and never fail to impress me.

3) What do you have lined up for the coming year?

In the new season I plan to drop my LP and a collection of Russian dark disco producer’s tracks. Then restart OBERWAVE parties in a new format, adding more show and theatricality to them. I’d like to make them more closed and more atmospheric.

Music

4) Which track in the mix is your favourite right now?

Futuristant – The Hurricane (Low Manuel Remix).

I’ve always liked melodic and cold synthetic music. This track sounds like it comes from the 80’s — that’s my favourite time in music history. I love this sound.

5) What is your favourite track of the last 12 months?

It’s a difficult question. There are a lot of them, but I’d like to highlight Volta Cab – Immortal Fix (Hesperius Draco Remix). I’m playing this track at almost every party and I can’t get enough of it. It’s always a real joy for me and the dance floor. But other than dance music, It’s King Dude – Who Taught You How to Love, I like such dark music very much.

6) What is the last record you bought?

La Mverte feat. Theodora – Le soir, encore.

I like this guy’s music and want to invite him to our 3 year anniversary OBERWAVE party.

7) What is your number 1 go to track of all time?

Guys, this is an impossible question. I need at least 10 tracks. But I want you to listen to Luminance – Martyr

8) Who or what are your biggest musical influences?

In fact I don’t often listen to electronic or if you want ‘dance’ music.
I grew up on post-punk and french coldwave. Then I listened to synth and wave music. And now, I like to listen to groups such as Death in June, Derniere Volonte, Position Parallele, Spiritual Front, etc.

Guitars are cooler than synthesizers, aren’t they?

9) Tell us about 3 DJ’s / Producer’s we may not know but should be looking out for?

I’d like to recommend 3 Russian projects, that are not so popular.

First, check out the group Elektromonteur — It’s a duet, that makes absolutely cool synthpop in russian language, in the spirit of Depeche Mode, album Violator.

Secondly, check out russian darkwave, here there are a lot of good projects like Gyves, Brandy Kills, Штадт, Sobranie 8 18.

And thirdly I recommend you to listen to Position Parallele — It’s french minimal synth and this is the most stylish music from all that I heard.

10) What is your favourite Venue or Festival to play at and why?

I don’t like to go to the festivals, I much prefer small closed parties. I think it’s easier to feel the atmosphere with 50-100 of your soulmates than surrounded by thousands of others who accidentally got here. I recommend Moscow club ‘Powerhouse’. I have a long history there and in the last year I now make parties here. This is a former mansion in the centre of Moscow with the best collection of whiskey and a special, mystical atmosphere.

Personal

11) Do you have a ritual before you start playing or straight after?

Before I start playing I’m nervous. And although I play every week, each time if feels like the first time. But I know if I’m nervous the set will be cool. If, on the contrary, I am calm before the set, then everything goes smoothly, without emotions, and this is not how I want to feel it.

12) What is your favourite film score?

Only Lovers Left Alive – its film of Jim Jarmush. It’s the most beautiful and romantic movie.

13) What is your dream destination?

My favourite city is Istanbul. I always see it in my dreams, and I’m visiting every year like a tourist. I think, I can live there, and I’m serious about moving there for the Winter season. The Winter in Russia is something that is impossible to get used to.
